These transparent inks leave vibrant color in only the white areas of scratchboard drawings and can easily be scratched through back to white when adding fine details and highlights. When painting back over areas, these remarkable inks do not leave a heavy ink residue. Our inks are pigmented, permanent, and water-based with a bit of shellac to prevent dissolving. For best results, build up the color in diluted washes following the directional lines in the drawing. Other brands of ink can leave heavy residue on the black surface and can be difficult to scratch if not quickly wiped off. It's easy to mix a wide range of colors with only the six base colors in this set. Each bottle allows the ink to be measured out by the drop. For final touch up, apply Ampersand Black Repair ink around the edges of the subject matter to cover any leftover residue and over-painting. Once all the color is in, go back and scratch out the highlights. This will give the forms in your drawing volume and dimension. Add more color where needed and repeat this process until you are totally satisfied with the results.
At Ampersand Art Supply, surface matters. Our mission is to make exceptional surfaces that artists trust. Ampersand is committed to supporting artists in their creative process by providing surfaces that are not only a joy to create on, but that will also withstand the test of time.
Scratchbord
The Professional’s Choice for Scratchboard
Ampersand’s Scratchbord is made from our premium warp-resistant 1/8" profile Hardbord and coated with an ultra-smooth, highly absorbent, acid-free kaolin clay ground with India ink. Scratchbord is easier to scratch into for clean, crisp details and lines and unlike paper scratchboards it will not rip, tear, bend, or wrinkle.
Made in the USA
Proudly handcrafted in our factory in Buda, Texas. Unparalleled quality and craftsmanship have made Ampersand Art Supply the leader in painting panels for over 25 years.

Add Beautiful Color with Inks
Add vibrant color and repair unwanted marks with Ampersand Scratchbord/Claybord Inks. These transparent, lightfast inks are tested to work perfectly with Scratchbord and Claybord. The Black Repair ink allows artists to cover unwanted lines in their artwork.
Frame Without Glass
Seal finished Scratchbord with a spray fixative and display without glass.
Truly Archival
Every Scratchbord panel is protected by our proprietary Archiva-Seal barrier technology, the most advanced formula for sealing wood that prevents support induced discoloration.
FSC-certified and Artist Safe
Central to Ampersand’s mission is to ensure that our products do not harm the environment or the artists who use them. Both our domestic and imported panels are made from FSC-certified forest products that promote sustainable forests and are also free from formaldehyde or harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds), unlike other hardboards and MDF boards.
